Eating Locally Is Easier And Tastier

I am a big believer in eating locally whenever possible and in the summer time it is so much easier to do. Buying local foods encourages local farms to stay in business, which is especially crucial now. According to the American Farmland Trust, two acres of agricultural land are lost to development every minute. Where will food come from if we lose too many of these small farms. I encourage you all to see Food Inc, if you haven’t seen it already to make you realize how important it is to support local small farms.

In addition, here are 4 great websites to explore to help you eat in this way:

  • Local Harvest: offers a definitive and reliable nationwide directory of farmers markets, family farms and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area, where you can buy produce, grass-fed meats, and many other goodies.
  • Food Routes: is a national nonprofit dedicated to reintroducing Americans to their food, the seeds it grows from, the farmers who produce it, and the routes that carry it from the fields to our tables.
  • Eat Well: is an online directory of sustainably-raised meat, poultry, dairy, and eggs. Enter your zip code to find healthful, humane, and eco-friendly products from farms, stores, and restaurants in your area.
