Protecting Our World

The EWG is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that’s committed to using the power of information to protect human health and the environment. The EWG’s mission is to keep toxins out of our air, water, food and bodies. The following lists are from their website  www.ewg.org, a great source of information.

EWG Mercury and Fish List

Pregnant women, nursing mothers and women of childbearing age should not eat tuna steaks, sea bass, oysters from the Gulf Coast, marlin, halibut, pike, walleye, white croaker, and largemouth bass. These are in addition to FDA’s recommendation to entirely avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish. I tell all my patients to avoid eating these fish and stick to the choices below. Safer choices for avoiding mercury exposure are farmed trout or catfish, shrimp, flounder, wild Pacific salmon, croaker, haddock, and blue crab from the mid-Atlantic.

EWG Most Contaminated Commercial Produce List

When commercially grown, these items are more likely to be contaminated with chemicals and pesticides. Whenever possible, purchase the following fruits and vegetables organically grown:

  • Apples
  • Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Cherries
  • Imported Grapes
  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Potatoes
  • Red Raspberries
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries
