Friends In Deed, Crisis Center for Life-Threatnening Illness

Have you been diagnosed with HIV, cancer, or another life-threatening physical illness?  Are you a caregiver, family member or friend of someone who is ill?  Are you living with grief because of the death of someone you loved?

At times like these, it’s easy to feel frightened, powerless, overwhelmed and alone. That’s why Friends In Deed is here. We’re a crisis center where you can find emotional and spiritual support to cope with these challenging life circumstances.

Back in 1991, the twin epidemics of AIDS and cancer were raging.  An overwhelming number of people, faced with the diagnosis of a life-threatening illness, were living in a state of confusion, shock and even terror.  Overworked doctors did not have time for the emotional and spiritual needs of their patients.  There was no place to turn to for support

That’s when Friends In Deed – the Crisis Center for Life-Threatening Illness – was born.

Since that time, many thousands of people diagnosed with HIV, cancer, or other life-threatening physical illnesses – caregivers, family and friends of those who are ill, and all living with grief and bereavement – have found a safe space at Friends In Deed where they can reconnect to a sense of possibility.

They arrive feeling frightened, powerless, overwhelmed and alone.  We help lessen the fear by offering the emotional and spiritual support to help them deepen their connection to the world, while making them aware of their capacity to contain the seemingly uncontainable.

The AIDS crisis is not overCancer is still an epidemic and other life-threatening illnesses continue to impact so many lives. Since we don’t want any barriers to prevent someone from walking in the front door, all of our services are free.

How do we make a difference?

Support Groups: The heart and soul of our work is the Big Group, which meets several times a week. It’s where one discovers we’re not alone on this journey and that it’s possible to have a life of quality, no matter how challenging the circumstances.

Crisis Counseling: For anyone needing more individualized support, we offer one-on-one emotional and spiritual counseling appointments every week.

Bodywork, Yoga & Mediation: We’re aware of the connection between physical and emotional well-being.  That’s why our team of  bodyworkers offers individual sessions every week.  We also have weekly classes in Yoga and guided meditation

Life-Saving Work with Teens: Through our School Program, we run HIV prevention workshops in schools for at-risk teens. We’ve reached more than 85,000 students since the program began.

Friends In Deed also provides support through:
