It can also be injected into the skin to fill in lines and wrinkles and to restore volume to the skin.”

Dr. Imahiyerobo-Ip notes that it can play a key role in our bodies’ wound-healing processes, thanks to the fact that it regulates our inflammation levels and signals the body to build more blood vessels in areas of tissue injury.
“Another area of the body where hyaluronic acid plays an important role is in our joints,” she says. “It is a key ingredient in synovial fluid, which keeps the joint spaces well lubricated. Problems with synovial fluid contribute to osteoarthritis.”

According to Dr. Imahiyerobo-Ip, you can benefit from the effects of hyaluronic acid at any age. “It’s great for those with mature, drier skin because of its hydrating properties,” she says. “However, those with sensitive skin, and even those with acne-prone skin, will benefit from its hydrating properties as well.”
She adds that hyaluronic aid is also an antioxidant, so it will help to protect the skin from environmental toxins. “During the cooler months, it may be a good idea to add a hyaluronic acid product into your skin care routine along with your usual moisturizer,” she says.

“Hyaluronic acid can be found in a variety of different products, from face masks to serums and moisturizers,” says Dr. Imahiyerobo-Ip. “If you are using a HA serum, it should be applied to the skin after cleansing and toning, but before moisturizing.”
She adds that you should start by using the product once a day to see how it works on your skin. “If you see benefits, it can be used up to twice a day,” she explains. Long story short, there’s not a lot hyaluronic acid can’t do. And especially as we head into the colder months, it’s worth a try!
