A safe sunscreen (like zinc oxide) is your best bet when it comes to protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. But did you know that you can increase your skin’s resistance to damage, aging, and even cancer with certain healthy foods?
Plants have their own built-in protection against the damaging effects of the sun.
Juice cleanses, juice bars, late night ads for juicing machines and the occasional celebrity endorsement all seem to be fueling a national juice-drinking craze. Fruit is healthy and fruit juice is a fast and convenient way to drink your nutrients, so what could possibly be wrong with a daily dose of orange, apple or cranberry juice or a trendy juice cleanse? More than you ever imagined! While I am a fan of green vegetable juices, most juices contain too much fruit and therefore sugar. Here are 5 thoughts on how fruit juice seriously undermines your health – and why you should quit the stuff:
Most mornings, my go-to breakfast is a protein and nutrient dense smoothie. It gives me the nutrients my body needs to get my day started right.
But there are some days when I’m in the mood for something hearty like a “cereal” breakfast. My favorite is gluten-free raw muesli which I soak in vanilla coconut milk (unsweetened, of course) overnight to allow the grains to soften and the delicious flavors to develop. It’s an easy breakfast recipe that hits the spot.
Our favorite gluten-free chef Elana Amsterdam has a new cookbook! All 100 recipes in here are free of gluten, dairy, grains and processed foods.
I use Elana’s recipes and recommend them to patients at the Eleven Eleven Wellness center all the time for three reasons:
1. They are simple, using minimal ingredients that are easy to find.
2. They are delicious. I have never made one of her recipes that didn’t turn out great!
3. They are paleo, or grain-free.
