Fourteen years ago to the day almost, I was in NYC at a conference hosted by Merrill Lynch as a financial analyst covering the food industry. If you had suggested then that I’d be writing this today, I’d have said you were nuts.
When I worked as an analyst, I learned how the food industry uses ingredients or their artificial counterparts to manage its profitability and meet earnings. But never once while attending conferences or speaking with traders on the floor of the stock exchange, did our team ever meet with the chemical companies engineering their products into our food, ingredients that required increased use of a portfolio of chemicals to help them manage their earnings. And we weren’t alone.
"Natural" claims in the cereal and granola aisle mislead consumers. A research study from The Cornucopia Institute indicates the "natural" claim is mostly meaningless marketing hype, in contrast to the USDA certified organic label which signifies the food was produced without genetically modified organisms (GMOs), toxic pesticides and other potentially dangerous synthetic inputs. Cornucopia and USDA research finds GMOs, and toxic pesticide residues, in "natural" cereal ingredients... and many "natural" brands are often priced higher than equivalent organic products.
Today we have more food options than ever before. From organic, to locally grown, to vegan, we can find food anytime, almost anywhere. Not only is it available 24/7 and marketed to us using mobile apps and Internet games, but it is also full of lots of ingredients that just didn't exist when we were kids. So while our food may look the same, looks can be deceptive, as it now contains artificial, engineered and genetically altered ingredients that are so new that patents have been filed on them in the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Engineered with new traits and characteristics, to withstand the routine spraying of record amounts of weed killers and other toxic ingredients, our food may look the same but it is anything but.
