The ultimate in well-connected catalysts, B vitamins work together to trigger critical biochemical reactions throughout your entire body.
In the constellation of vitamins, D has been the rising star. Many doctors now accept the D deficit as a cause of bone loss, fatigue, increased risk of heart disease and even cancer, and they routinely test and treat their patients for this deficiency.
Amid the D mania, though, a quieter movement has emerged: An increasingly vocal group of nutritionists and integrative practitioners argue that B vitamins play a critical role in heart health and immunity, and also provide widely effective treatments for headache, fatigue, mood, stress and menstrual disorders.
A few weeks ago, I met with a patient named Jackie who is a 30-year-old woman working in retail in New York City. Because of her job, she’s on her feet all day. The problem? She had major muscle pain, or “myalgia” in her feet. She had so much pain that she had to wear sneakers all the time.
A few weeks later when Jackie came bouncing in the office wearing cute summer sandals, I knew we had to share her amazing story. Here’s how her foot pain went from a “9” to a “1 or 2.”
As my teacher Joshua Rosenthal at Integrative Nutrition always said, “given half a chance, the body will heal itself.”
In the past three years of supporting patients and customers on the Be Well Cleanse, I’ve heard lots of common responses: more energy, weight loss, better digestion.
There have also been some more quirky or uncommon results that are pretty wonderful. These certainly won’t happen to everyone. It’s hard to say if they are the result of cleaning up your diet, taking the digestive supplements or the protein shakes -- or maybe a combination of all three. Either way, these surprising results are worth celebrating!
Sometimes the reality of our lives is painful. Sometimes there’s not a lot we can do to fix it or make it go away. Sometimes standing up, facing, and being with that painful reality is the only option. And this is gutsy; it takes courage, it takes ferocity, it is HARD.
When life is a struggle and the things that get me are up in my face, when I can only sit with and behold what is the most difficult, I often support myself by looking to a teacher—a wise owl as I might call him or her. One of my go-to guys for this is Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.
