FAQ's

 

How do I know if I am ready to go on Cleanse?

Cleanse is best to start if you are generally healthy but feel sluggish, have abdominal bloating, gas or constipation, are retaining fluid and feel puffy and have all sorts of aches and pains. Always make sure that you have no serious underlying illness or disease that could be compromising your health.

Any suggestions before I start the program?

To ease into the program slowly, we strongly recommend cutting out certain foods and beverages one week before - including caffeine, sugar, alcohol, dairy, wheat, corn and processed foods – gradually cut down more every day so that by the end of the week you’ve stopped altogether or almost stopped.

Is there anything else I need to have for the program?

A hand/stick blender is useful for pureeing soups directly in the pot.
A couple of tennis balls for self massage.
A couple of blankets for restorative exercise.

Do I have to stay on the program for 2 weeks and if so, why?

Having done this for over 20 years, I have found that to get more significant changes, a minimum of 2 weeks is required to get more long lasting changes and in particular, to reset your appetite.

Can I do 4 weeks of CLEANSE for an even stronger detox?

Yes you can, it’s perfectly safe and many people do so. Especially those who want to lose more weight.

How much water should I be drinking?

Ideally you need to urinate at least every 3-4 hours during the day while on the Cleanse program. So make sure you are drinking enough water to facilitate this frequency. Herbal teas are fine too.

Anything I can do to make the shake taste nicer?

You can add a cup of blueberries or a fresh pear to the shake and mix it in a blender.
You can also mix your shake with dairy-free milks such as almond, rice, hemp, coconut or half water, half dairy-free milk.

My first few days were miserable, how long before I start to feel any better?

Most people start to feel better after about 3- 4 days.

Can I travel?

Absolutely! The packets are made to go with you wherever you go, just remember to take along your blender bottle.

Am I allowed green tea?

Yes, a cup of green tea once or twice a day is fine.

Any suggestions for helping with cravings?

Distract yourself, go for a walk or do some light exercise. Cravings usually last about 10- 20 minutes and then pass. So the more you can distract yourself, the easier it will be to deal with your cravings.

Keep sugary snacks out of your house and office if possible. It is difficult to snack on things that are not there.

Take one or two of the Glutamine capsules every couple of hours if necessary, these will help with sugar cravings.

Drink a lot of water or sparkling water as this can sometimes help with cravings.

If I accidentally eat a food that I was not supposed to, what will happen to me?

Nothing serious. It’s possible that you may experience a bit of a reaction like feeling a bit nauseous, tired and headachy but that will usually pass within 24 hours.

Why do I have to eliminate certain foods while I’m on the Cleanse program?

What is gluten & why can’t I eat gluten grains?

Gluten is a type of grain that has a mixture of gliadin and glutenin proteins that are found in wheat, rye and barley. Gluten grains contain a mixture of proteins that are very difficult for many people to digest. It is believed that some people do not produce the liver enzyme that is necessary to break down this protein and metabolize it. If this happens, the undigested protein can leak through the gut wall and into the bloodstream where the immune system reacts as if it were a foreign substance. Fighting gluten stresses and exhausts the immune system. So we do not allow gluten products in order to give the digestive system a rest and time to restore.

Why can’t I eat oranges, strawberries, grapes, bananas, dried fruit?

Some people have sensitivities to oranges and strawberries, so we have removed them in order to reduce exposure to foods that can cause these issues. Grapes, bananas and dried fruit are very high in sugar.

What is wrong with eating nightshades?

Some people have sensitivities to tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants without realizing it. They can cause joint pain in some people, so we do not allow them in the CLEANSE phase.

Why can’t I eat corn?

Corn is very high in sugar and is usually genetically modified in the USA, which may cause problems.

Why must nuts be unroasted and unsalted?

Store bought roasted and salted nuts are a problem because they are very high in sodium and have been roasted at a very heat which alters the fats in the nuts and destroys their benefits. You can roast nuts yourself at a low temperature – 175 deg for 10 – 15 minutes.

I only eat fish, but the fish on your list are hard to find, what do you suggest?

If you like to eat fish, try to buy wild caught fish and limit your intake to 2-3 times a week. Canned wild salmon is also a great option. Helpful websites for sourcing healthy fish are www.vitalchoice.com and www.seafoodwatch.org

Can I eat brown rice bread?

No, as it is sweetened with fruit juice.

Can I eat edamame?

Yes, as long as they are organic

Why can’t I eat pistachio and macadamia nuts?

The nuts that you are allowed to eat offer the most healthful benefits and since nuts are very high in fat, we try to limit the amount you can eat.

Why can’t I eat peanuts?

Many people have peanut sensitivities or allergies, so we don’t allow them during the program.

Can I eat sushi?

You can have sushi if it's made with brown rice, but no soy sauce unless it's wheat free soy sauce. Sashimi is allowed.

How do I re-introduce foods that I have avoided while on Cleanse?

Re-introduce the foods you’ve been avoiding into your meals one at a time, every two days, to test your reaction to it. When testing a food, have a substantial serving of it for breakfast and lunch, and monitor your reactions. If possible, make detailed notes in a food journal —particularly about what happens to you during the reintroduction phase.

Caution: women should not try food testing right before their periods or during pregnancy because they are likely to be extra sensitive then.

Most food reactions will occur within a few hours of eating what you add back, although it can occasionally take up to two to three days for reactive symptoms to appear. The beauty of this test is that if you are reactive to a specific food, you are usually extra sensitive to it after you have initially cleared it from your system – so it should be easier for you to notice how different foods affect your system.

If you have a food reaction, such as nausea or a stomach ache, when reintroducing previously avoided foods, take two tablets of Alka- Seltzer Gold or a tablespoon of buffered vitamin C powder in water.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

If you do react to any food, rotating your foods may make you less sensitive to them. So only eat the foods to which you are reacting every five days. For example, if you are sensitive to wheat, dairy, and corn, schedule yourself to eat wheat on days one and six, dairy on days two and seven, and corn on days three and eight.

Reactions might mean that you may not have enough digestive juices to properly break down the foods to which you are reacting. Trying some digestive enzymes with your meal may help.

I am starting to lose too much weight and want to curb it?

Losing too much weight is extremely unusual, but if it is happening, increase your intake of good fats like avocados and nuts.

I am not losing any weight and I don’t know why?

This probably means your weight is appropriate or if not there may be some metabolic reason like a hormonal imbalance, often a poor functioning thyroid is the cause. Once you are finished with the Cleanse program, this should be explored further. We suggest a full thyroid work up with your own doctor.

If I have not had a bowel movement for some time, what do I do?

One to two tablespoons of Castor oil with lemon and water often does the trick. Magnesium works very well too ––500-1,000mg of magnesium citrate is helpful. Or you could try a gentle herbal laxative such as Swiss Kriss or the Ayurvedic formula, Triphala (usually available at the health food store or on the Internet.) Make sure you are keeping well hydrated as this will also be helpful.

What is the normal number of bowel movements per day?

For most people, at least one bowel movement a day is normal but anywhere between one and three is normal.

What to do about gas and bloating?

The antimicrobial herbs in the pill packets “kill” the bad bacteria in the gut which can sometimes cause bloating. This discomfort should settle in about 4-5 days. This can also be due to taking in more fiber than you are used to. This too will settle down in a few days.

Regular bowel movements are also important in relieving that gassy bloated feeling.

Any suggestions on how to give up coffee without going cold turkey?

If you have a week to wean yourself off coffee, follow this plan:
Day One: Have a regular cup of coffee. If you have another cup, blend it 50-50 with decaf.
Day Two-Four: Continue blending your coffee 50-50 with decaf.
Day Five-Six: Have 25% regular coffee, 75% decaf.
Day Seven: Eliminate completely, or if necessary, substitute with green tea, weak black tea or Yerba mate. You can continue drinking green tea, weak black tea or Yerba mate throughout the program.

If however, you are starting the program immediately and do not have a full week to taper off coffee, we suggest the following:
Day one: Blend your coffee 50-50 with decaf
Day two: Blend your coffee 25 – 75 with decaf
Day three: Eliminate completely.
You may drink green tea, weak black tea or Yerba mate throughout the program.

What should I do if I get a headache?

Headaches can occur in the first few days as you are withdrawing from caffeine especially and sometimes sugar. Try the Restorative yoga poses and the tennis ball massages, take a hot bath, go for a walk and if needed, try drinking green tea which has a little caffeine but is a healthier option than coffee. It is best to avoid medication unless it is really severe and you feel you cannot function without treating it.

Is it ok to exercise and do physical activities?

Yes, provided you do not over exert yourself. Keep your workouts a little lighter and incorporate some restorative yoga and relaxation techniques as well.

If I am feeling a little weak, what should I do?

Have a cup of soup or eat another small meal like nuts and fruit. Relax in a Restorative yoga pose for 10-15 minutes.

Will my sleep be affected while I am on the program?

It’s possible. Whenever you make major changes in how you eat, it can affect your sleep. This usually settles down after a few days and most people wake up in the morning with a clear head and full of energy.

What is the next step once I have completed the Cleanse program?

Once you have completed the 2 week Cleanse program, the perfect way to continue is with the Sustain or Recharge shakes, especially if you like the convenience of a shake. You can also start the Daily Dose supplements to support your health and vitality. Either of the shakes plus Daily Dose, provides a solid, daily, nutritional foundation for overall health and vitality.

Is this program appropriate for children?

No. Although it’s a safe and gentle program, it is not made for use by children.

What should I do if I am on Prescription Medications?

You should not stop any prescription medication while on the program.

Can I continue with supplements that I was taking prior to being on the program?

For the 2 weeks you are on the Cleanse program, it is not necessary. The shakes have the nutrients you need for the 2 weeks.

What are other names for sugars so that I know what to look for when reading labels?

It is important to look for refined sugars in all forms on the ingredients label. The following are various versions of refined sugar:

Cane sugar, dried cane syrup, brown sugar, beet sugar, date sugar, grape sugar, glucose, maltose, maltodextrin, dextran, dextrose, sorbitol, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, fructose, corn sugar, fruit juice, fruit juice concentrate, barley malt, caramel, carob syrup and sorghum syrup.

What other ingredients should I be avoiding?

As much as possible, avoid the following ingredients:

Partially hydrogenated or hydrogenated fats and oils

Found in margarine, shortening and virtually all baked goods. These oils contain trans-fatty acids and are well known to contribute to poor cardiovascular health and heart disease.

Artificial sweeteners

Such as aspartame (Nutrasweet and Equal), sucralose (Splenda), saccharin (Sweet’N Low) and acesulfame K.

Sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate

These are found in most packaged meat products and deli meats.

Monosodium glutmate (MSG)

Found in many “instant meals”, frozen dinners, packaged meats, canned soups, soup stocks, salad dressings, soy sauce, Spice mixes, flavorings and seasonings. If you see the words “sodium caseinate,” “hydrolyzed protein,” “autolyzed yeast” or “yeast extract” on a product label, you can assume it contains some amount of MSG. MSG is an excitotoxin which means it damages nerve cells.

Sulphur

Found in dried fruits. They commonly cause allergies.

Potassium bromate

Found in factory-made breads. It is banned from use in food products in Europe, Canada and most other countries, including China.
Preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, TBHQ)

Found in butter, meats, cereals, chewing gum, baked goods, snack foods, dehydrated potatoes and beer. Some studies show they cause cancer in animals.

Artificial colors (such as FD&C Red No.3, Yellow Nos. 5 and 6, Blue Nos. 1 and 2)

Found in soda, sports drinks and gelatin desserts. Most artificial colorings are synthetic chemicals and have low nutritional value.

Artificial fats (such as Olestra)

Found in snack foods. Olestra reduces the body’s ability to absorb fat-soluble carotenoids (such as alpha-and beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and canthaxanthin) from fruits and vegetables which reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

And any other processed food.

Processed foods are anything not produced in nature: quick or instant grains, meals in a package, box or can, factory-produced breads, dinner mixes, frozen meals. And look out for snack foods, even ones that claim they are healthy and sugar-free.

Remember, the longer the ingredients label, the further away the food is from nature and the less healthy it is.

Great Cleanse - Plan out meals in advance
This was the second time i've done this cleanse and I definitely feel noticeably better after each time. The only thing I would recommend is thoroughly prepping your kitchen before starting. The last time i did this cleanse was a few years ago and I didn't realize the list of foods to embrace/ignore had been re-done. The list of foods to embrace seems terrifying if you do not cook, like myself. I think if there were a couple of quick, light meal suggestions either on the blog, or in a packet along with the cleanse it would be a home run. I highly recommend the cleanse otherwise! I do hope to be able to do it again this year when I am better prepared.

I highly recommend the 14 day cleanse.
My cleanse seems to be going great. I have three more days onthe 14 day plan. I have lost 6 lbs and I never feel hungry! It's amazing. I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes from Dr. Lipman's books and blog. They look yummy! Before I started the cleanse I had such a sweet tooth. Definitely eating too many sweets. Now the cravings have just about disappeared. My daughter is also doing this program. She just started and is into
her fourth day. I am turning sixty this year and want to be healthier and lose about 15 lbs.
I am trying to get my triglycerides down and my blood pressure without taking meds.

Love it! Don't hesitate to try it!
This was my first cleanse. Although I have 1 1/2 days left to finish, I couldn't be more pleased. I've lost 7 pounds and have rarely had cravings or been hungry. Love the taste of the shakes, and I've had no trouble creating salads and veggies with rotisserie chicken or tuna to satisfy me at mealtime twice a day. I'm a little fearful about going back to "regular" eating, but I'm going to try reintroducing my old favorites one per day to see what might affect me negatively. It feels so good to feel good. Love it!

Great program
Cleanses are usually very hard for me to stick to, but not this one. I never felt hungry, and found myself getting pretty creative with the food I was preparing. Would definitely use again!

So Great I Did It Twice!
I finished the first 2 weeks of the cleanse and loved the way I was feeling so much that I ordered it again and am on my second day of the second 2 weeks.
The first 4 days of the initial cleanse were tough as I had a long lasting headache, but I woke up on day 5 feeling amazing and it was more than worth it.
The shakes are easy to drink, I didn't mind the taste at all. Dr. Lipman and his team have made this so easy to accomplish and I really liked the group cleanse Facebook page and the YouTube check-ins.
In the gap between the 2 cleanses I had one latte and 2 days with some gluten and a little sugar and my energy levels plummeted. Comparing how I felt on those days to how I felt on the cleanse has me more committed to keeping sugar and gluten out of my diet as much as possible. Feeling this good is worth it!

Great cleanse. Lose the plastic packaging and go back to paper!
Was really disappointed to open my latest cleanse and see the paper pouches had been replaced by PLASTIC pouches. Besides being plastic they are hard to open and require scissors if you don't want powder everywhere!
Besides that—this cleanse works and I feel great every time I do it. It also has helped me improve every facet of my diet. I order the shakes alone to have in the morning for breakfast. The flavor is easy to drink, unlike other shakes I've tried.

On the right track
Love the results of the cleanse! My fiance and I both lost 12lbs. I sleep better and my energy level has improved. Im not as hungry as I used to be and Im not craving treats all the time like I used to. I am definitely adopting this lifestyle, I feel too amazing not to. I cant lie and say the shakes are delicious, but with a little creativity they can be quite good!

Feeling great
My partner and I did the cleanse together after reading Dr. Lipman's book. We both feel great. As executives and competitive cyclist we demand a lot from our bodies the cleanse has improved our performance, we are both sleeping better and clear at work. The recipes are delicious and easy to prepare we are eating them regularly.

The Best Cleanse I've Ever Done!
This cleanse is so effective and it's really easy to accomplish. I am on my last day and I feel great. My bloated stomach has gone way and so have my carb cravings. I don't miss sugar or unhealthy carbs at all.
It took five days for me to feel good and I had stopped using coffee and sugar months before starting the cleanse. But on day six I felt fantastic and healthy. What everyone says is true—my energy levels are way up, my mind clear and sharp and my mood is calm and joyful. I plan on doing the cleanse again next month and I am continuing with the maintenance shakes. Thank you Dr. Lipman for sharing your expertise and making it affordable to those of us who don't live in Malibu or the Hamptons!

My daughter has been trying to get me to do this cleanse for sometime now. I was skeptical and concerned that it wouldn't be good for my health at 71 years of age. The cleanse was just what I needed. My level of inflammation decreased, my sugar numbers went down, and my stomach is much less bloated. The bonus is I lost 6 pounds on the cleanse and my doctors are very pleased. Life changing!
A friend sent me Dr. Lipman' book ''10 Reasons You Feel Old and Get Fat', and I thought, well gee, thanks...As I read the book, I realized that my diet was carb heavy, what I thought were healthy carbs, like rolled oats and quinoa, but multiple servings per day. I decided to follow the cleanse and diet, and had amazing results. I feel great, I lost so much belly fat, and have amazing energy. I am 63 years old and have a new lease on life. The program is easy to follow, you don't feel deprived, and the recipes are great. The staff is great, I called several times with questions and the support provided was exceptional. I am a believer!

I wasn't entirely sold on the benefits while I was on the cleanse as to how good I was feeling until I was done with it and essentially reverted back to how I had been eating before and I immediately felt more tired (that's the biggest thing I noticed). I did the cleanse just for my own interest in living a more healthy lifestyle and I don't eat that poorly anyway, but I wanted to take it a step further and try this out. Generally I just felt lighter, and skinnier, that constant bloated feeling was gone. My head was clearer. I've been taking Saturday classes and the two weeks that I was on this cleanse I was much more alert than I was any other week. I also had more energy during the two weeks My sleeping habits didn't change and I continued to go to yoga or swimming everyday and I had some of my best workouts in a long time. The challenge I had was the constant attention to what you're eating - it's very difficult to have a social life (esp in NYC). Meal prepping takes a considerable amount of time if you're not home for a few hours a day to take care of it. And the shakes...well...they don't taste great. They're not terrible, but it would have been nice to have a couple versions to switch between so you're not consuming the exact same flavor three times a day. I did make smoothies out of them in the morning with fruit and almond butter or veggies, which I would definitely recommend. Smoothies for breakfast are now a much needed part of my routine! Give this one a try for sure!!
I was extremely skeptical. I immediately thought " yeah right another waste of money." I am here to tell your that Dr. Frank Lipman's book and cleanse program not only delivered what it promised, but I couldn't believe how easy it was (initially after the first four days were over). I am most impressed how I never felt hungrey, how balanced I felt, and a considerable amount of discomfort in my gut went away in two weeks.

Lots More Energy
I eat pretty good but I was still fatigued, had brain fog and muscle aches. I knew I should cut dairy, wheat and sugar out to feel better but I never would have imagined I would feel this great during the cleanse by eliminating various foods. I just completed the cleanse and have clear thinking, more energy than I ever thought possible and no aches! These 14 days will change your life. I did what I could do following the plan, exercise and other recommendations. I emailed the health coaches and received answers immediately to my questions. I've been on other cleanses. This cleanse is pretty simple and results are incredible. You will only regret that you didn't try this sooner. All the best!

I started doing this cleanse with Holli Thompson. I did this cleanse for 1 month and my cholesterol went from 240 t0 170.. I am in the process of this cleanse again to get ready for the summer

Speechless!!!!
I am a skeptic!!! I went into the cleanse with commitment yet doubt. Holy Moly!! This has changed my life. I can't sing the program's praises loud and long enough. In 2 1/2 weeks, i see eliminated inflammation, reduced mucus and ear wax buildup, skin improvement, longer and deeper sleep, less mood swings, calmer overall, my pulse rate is the best it has been in over a year, loss of weight, aches and pains gone from joints, more pep in my step and these are the results that I am noticing.
I am someone that was ALWAYS hungry. This program satiated my appetite!

Felt great the entire time. No headaches, slept well, normal regulation. You realize how important Smart nutrition is to your health. The eczema and psoriasis completely diminished and was the impetus to try BeWell in the first place. Very pleased overall.

My Skin is Glowing & I Feel Lighter
I wasn't trying to lose weight on the Cleanse, I just wanted to detoxify my body and see if it would give me more energy. I lost a couple of pounds anyway, but it was all in the right places - mainly my stomach. I also felt my stomach shrinking - probably because I was bloated and didn't realize it. The first 5 days were hard, but it was well worth it. By day 6, I started to feel really great. I was energized and just felt happier. Everywhere I went, people commented on my skin. I didn't even realize it at first, but it had a new glow to it. I love coffee, but I also discovered that I love green tea. After the Cleanse, I still drink two cups of green tea in the morning during the week, and coffee on the weekends. And I still enjoy a morning shake for breakfast - it sets me up for the day ahead. I look forward to going on the Cleanse again - I plan to do it twice a year! I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to try something different. It really works and there are so many benefits.

I can’t get over how great I feel.
I am over 50 and I have never done a cleanse before and after all my research I did the Be Well 14-day Cleanse. Since the Cleanse, I can’t feel my aches or pains in my back and shoulders. I am sleeping better and feel amazing. I actually can see my waist again. I can’t get over how great I feel.

I'm amazed
I am so amazed by how wonderful I feel. After the 14-day cleanse, I could tell my body was still detoxing so I did another 14 days. I lost a total of 14.5 pounds of inflammation. I’m very excited but also a little sad that the 28 days are over—it went so fast. I have lymphocyctic colitis and Hashimoto’s disease but for the first time in years I forgot what it felt like to be normal. I loved the shakes and the recipes. I learned so much about my relationship with food. I have such gratitude for Dr. Lipman and all the health coaches that work with him. It is obvious you all are very caring and love what you do.

Back in control.
After a rough first 4-5 days, I’m now on Day 9 and feeling great. I have arthritis in my hands and now I can squeeze them tightly WITHOUT pain, which is amazing. I feel very calm, have a lot of energy and am on “automatic” with the Cleanse now. I’m back in control of what I’m eating and eating mindfully with ease.

I have transformed my life with the help of your site and philosophy. I am reading the newsletter voraciously, have a shake (sustain or recharge with greens and probiotic) every morning and continue to feel the best I've ever felt. I was a fit 140lbs when I was 51 and after a hysterectomy at 52 and successive bouts of asthma which were treated with months of prednisone at 53 and 54 I ballooned up to 200lbs. Every joint screamed and I became sluggish and dispirited. In February this year I did two things to re-find myself: started on the Be Well program and began with a yoga coach. 7 months later I am now happier and more well than ever. Great!

hi i have a question about the cleanse, i have been reading reviews and they all say the same in the end they feel so much better, but i also read on several that the first four to five days were rough. what can i expect those first few days?

A

If you are a coffee drinker or consume a lot of sugar or starchy carbs, the first few days of the Cleanse can be hard, with feelings of fatigue or headaches. The best way to detox from caffeine is to cut your dose in half each day, and to start your withdrawal process before you start the Clenase program, e.g. start reducing your coffee intake a few days before the Cleanse start date. If your diet is generally healthy and alcohol, sugar, or caffeine are not a big part of your life, then you usually feel okay throughout the Cleanse -- it really depends upon your uniques biochemistry and your starting point. Either way, they symptoms are generally mild and usually most related to caffeine withdrawal.

Frequency of cleansing really varies by person. Cleansing once per year is probably the norm, but some people find benefit in doing a Cleanse each season or twice a year. Although non-gluten, whole grains and legumes can be part of a healthy diet, they are a significant source of carbohydrates, which we reduce during the Cleanse. Grains and legumes can also can be difficult to digest for anyone with compromised digestion so we take them out during the Cleanse so you can evaluate for yourself if your digestion, energy levels and overall wellbeing improves. Vegetarians may include up to 1/2 cup of both grains and legumes in their daily diet during the Cleanse.
